The Steller's Jay in a member of the crow family and
is a large and is the western equivalent of the eastern Blue Jay in temperament and
behavior. We have a couple show up every year as does my daughter on the other side of
town closer to the hills. They come in looking for the feeders with black
oiled sunflower
seeds. They have been seen on the pine cone feeders too. They are large and noisy but
beautiful. The Finches and the Steller's Jays are about the only birds we get here with
brilliant color.
2002 - this year we
have a pair nesting in our fir trees in the front yard. This is the first
time we've had a resident pair.
